THE BEST RUGS FOR SMALLER SPACES: 6 TIPS AND TRICKS

Let’s face it, we don’t all live in a mansion. Living in a somewhat smaller space can be lovely but also challenging. There’s a thin line between cosy and cluttered, so all the more reason to really think about your interior. Because with a little planning and forethought, even the most cramped spaces can become equal parts functional and eye-catching.

Decorating a smaller space?

Consider using a warm and rich or soft and soothing color to cover the majority of the walls of room. Additionally, using that wall color at least one other time in your space — for example for your area rug. This will pull your style together while continuing to let it feel open.

Choose a neutral rug

A light colored woolen rug or a rug in a natural fabric like jute will add texture and warmth to your room, without it being overpowering. Let it sync with your wall color and let your accessories do the statements here.

Stripes all the way

Does this feel all too careful? Go for a striped rug. Our lovely Stripe a Pose rugs can be combined with anything because of their natural jute base, but the stripes give it an edge as well. Make sure you place the rug well: a rug with stripes can make your small space seem longer or wider, depending on the rug placement.

Define different areas in your room

With small spaces you also have to think functional. If you live in a studio or a loft, a rug can be ideal to define different functional spaces. Use your rug to define a seating area or the ‘bedroom’. Feel free to play with textures here. For example; choose a Moroccan high pile rug for your bedroom area and a flat weave wool rug for your seating area.

Spice up your corners with a round rug. A round rug brings an unexpected and playful twist to your room and can provide depth to a small space. Put it in front of your reading chair, with the front legs on it. Our Dot rug is an expert in this!

Go big!

We hear you think; big? Yes big. Many people think you should opt for a small rug for a small space, but often this makes your room feel even smaller. There is no reason not to go for a rug that is almost the size of your room. Just leave a few inches on all sides between the rug and the walls for the best result, or a bit more if you would like to walk around it.

Don’t forget the bedroom

Of course the bedroom should never be forgotten! But in the case of smaller spaces, it’s even more important it’s a place where you feel relaxed and at home. A nice rug will make your bedroom extra cosy. When your bedroom is tiny, place the rug next or half under to your bed.
So you see, big or small, with a bit of a game plan every house can feel like home!
